Every person has a threshold for what they can handle emotionally. When our threshold is exceeded, we feel uneasy – even overwhelmed – and we begin to use one or more coping mechanisms. These coping mechanisms include anxiety, anger, depression, overwhelm, sadness, substance abuse, and many others.

As you concentrate on your breathing you will be aware of the chatter in your head – just observe this and let it go. Eventually the chatter will subside and you will be left with a calm empty space. Over a relatively short period of time (28 days) if you consistently do deep breathing meditation your brain will grow it’s threshold of stress tolerance.
Over time, your dysfunctional feelings and behaviours happen less and, less often, because it becomes less and less likely that whatever is happening in your life can push you over your new, now higher threshold and trigger those feelings and behaviours in the first place. As a result, they fall away for good. You deal with whatever happens with more equanimity and more inner peace.
Think of it like a runner – they start out with a certain threshold, but raise it by running every day until, what would have overwhelmed them in the beginning, becomes easy.
